Client asks you to do something you think is a bad idea.

Overview

Clients hire you for your expertise. If you feel their ideas will ultimately hurt their chances for success, it’s your job to relay this information. Be specific about why you think their ideas are not advantageous. Give them other options.

Hi <Client>,

To clarify, you’re looking for <repeat what they said they’re looking for>.

I understand your point of view and I wanted to give you my take.

From my experience, <insert your counter opinion>. The reason is because <insert your rationale>.

I recommend you <your recommendation>.

What do you think?

<You>

Notes & Strategy

  • Don’t be afraid to give your opinion even if it’s contrary to what the client thinks.

  • Back up your ideas with facts, anecdotes and personal opinions.

  • Be specific.

  • Clients hire you for your expertise.

  • Don’t be shy about positioning yourself as an expert.

  • Emphasize why you think your position is better rather than repeating that their position is wrong.

  • Give them other options and the rationale behind those options.

  • If you feel uneasy about a client request (i.e., it’s unethical) be upfront about it.

  • Walk away from an unethical client engagement rather than compromise your ethics or reputation.
