How to ask a client for a testimonial.

Overview

Clients will never write the perfect testimonial. It’s not their job to sell you. Plus, you never want to give your clients “homework”—asking them to write lengthy answers to your questions.

Instead of asking a client to write you a testimonial, compile feedback from conversations you have with your client. Interview your clients and transcribe those interviews. Have real conversations and then take “sound bites” from those conversations and construct a testimonial.

Hi <Client>,

Thanks so much for working with me. I really enjoyed working with you <and your team.>

You’re one of my best clients and it was a pleasure to work with you.

I was wondering if we could have a short conversation <on Zoom / Skype / on the phone> where I could ask you a few questions and get your thoughts about our collaboration?

I’m always looking to improve my skills and get better at what I do.

Your feedback helps me see things I would otherwise miss.

With your permission I would like to use your feedback as a testimonial on my website.

Here are a few days and times I would be available for a chat:

Again, it’s been a pleasure and thanks in advance for taking the time to chat with me.

<You>

Notes & Strategy

  • Instead of emailing clients questions, have a conversation with them (via Zoom or on the phone) and then transcribe the talk.

  • It’s easier for clients to speak their thoughts than to write them in an email.

  • The best time to have this conversation is right after you delivered the project.

  • Enthusiasm is high and the client has the project fresh on their mind.

    Questions to ask

  • What was the problem you were struggling with before you reached out to me for help?

  • What made you reach out to me for help?

  • What were the obstacles in deciding to hire me?

  • Why did you choose me?

  • Now that we’ve worked together. What’s going on with your business? What are the results?

  • What was your favorite part of the experience working with me?

  • Did anything surprise you about working with me?

  • Would you have wanted anything different from our experience together?

  • Is there anything you’d like to add?
